A gold bar is gold, in any shape but most often a bar, that has been marked by the manufacturer with its precise weight and purity. Gold bars have been produced in sizes from small thin ones that can be rolled or even sewn into clothing up to the 12.5 KG London Good Delivery bars, made by several different manufacturers for use by central banks. Even heavier gold bars are often produced by large mining operations. These are called "dore" bars and are of low purity gold. They are then transported elsewhere for processing into high grade gold. Small gold bullion bars do not have the same market recognition as commonly traded bullion coins such as the Krugerrand. In addition small gold bullion bars, when compared to gold bullion coins, sell for a larger premium over the spot gold price because of higher production costs. (they do not have the same economy of scale) For these two reasons it is recommended that the small time gold investor stick mainly with gold bullion coins.
